Perion made a bold strategic decision to stimulate a national conversation about digital privacy by reaching beyond just brand marketers and advertising agencies by speaking with wit and unmistakable clarity to a broad audience. To accomplish that and insert the company into the ongoing privacy conversation, Perion created a tongue-in-cheek video entitled “The Complete Guide to Protecting Your Privacy Online,” directed by award-winning filmmaker Max Joseph. The video connected with consumers and advertisers alike by exaggerating the lengths one individual will go to protect their privacy. The lead character endures a variety of challenges and comically exaggerated scenarios in an effort to stay “off the grid,” using humor to demonstrate how impossible it is to maintain online privacy. The video reveals how innocently we give up personal information without realizing, resulting in data being tracked and sold to publishers for creepy targeting and retargeting. Ultimately, SORT emerges as the only alternative as the payoff. Within 11 days of launch, the video garnered 1.5 million views on YouTube, increased Perion’s social following by 34.2% increase on LinkedIn, 213% on Facebook and 54% on Instagram. To date, the video has received 17.1M impressions, 2.9M engagements with social posts and 57.4K clicks to the SORT mini site. The video also impressively drove 162K site visits to Perion’s website. The video was debuted at an in-person event with director Max Joseph in attendance, a panel was also held to discuss the video and the privacy landscape. The video also achieved media coverage, with features in AdExchanger and Campaign US.
